Oklahoma Insurance Dept. helps Oklahomans recover unclaimed life insurance benefits
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — In connection with Life Insurance Awareness Month, Oklahoma consumers have been matched with $260 million in life insurance and annuity benefits through the Life Insurance Policy Locator, according to the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
The free service, hosted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), securely checks participating insurance companies to help beneficiaries locate existing life insurance policies or annuity contracts for free.
Since January 2017, more than 13,000 state residents have submitted requests through the online tool. More than $40 million of those benefits have been matched so far in 2026.

“Life insurance can be critical to families during a time of loss,” said Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready. “Unfortunately, navigating old paperwork or locating missing policies can be overwhelming. This tool ensures Oklahomans can finally connect with benefits that are rightfully theirs.”
To submit a search, beneficiaries must enter the deceased individual’s information, which includes their Social Security number, legal name, date of birth, and date of death.
If a match is found and the requester is verified as a beneficiary, then the insurance company will reach out directly. Searches may take 90 business days or more to process, and notifications are sent only if a match is confirmed.
The online tool has received more than 1.5 million search requests all across the county, resulting in more than 780,000 matches with annuities or life insurance policies, delivering over $16 billion in total benefits through July 31.
